S31 Phoenixville Mural & Renaissance Park

The mural highlights Phoenixville’s history including the 3” ordnance rifle, pictured at the upper left corner of the mural.  The respect for the Phoenix Iron company led officials from the federal government to come to Phoenixville to ask their help in developing an improved field piece.  The result was the 3” ordinance rifle, the so-called Griffen Cannon, named for John Griffen, the superintendent at the iron company at that time.  Over 1,200 were made, and 90 are still on the field at Gettysburg.  The mural wall is slated for repairs later this year and in 2015.
