The most prominent member and leader of the Anti-Slavery Society was Elijah Pennypacker, whose home at Whitehorse Farm was a very short distance from the Meeting House. He had been elected to the PA legislature in 1831 and served in leadership positions there. However, he resigned in 1839 to devote himself to the abolitionist cause. He served as President of both the Chester County and PA Anti-Slavery Societies and also became an Underground Railroad station master and conductor. Using his own home with hidden tunnels connected to it; he guided and transported over 60 fugitive slaves a month across the Schuylkill River to Norristown for the next leg of their northward journey. No slaves were ever apprehended while under his care!
