From the Gay Street Bridge overlook, you can learn more about Historic Phoenixville. This portion of the Phoenix Iron & Steel Company was developed later in the 19th century. By then the iron & steel company had grown tremendously, stretching west all the way to route 113. The entire company property eventually covered over 130 acres. This is where the actual steel fabrication took place. It was here that the structural steel for buildings and bridges was fabricated. For example, the famous Manhattan Bridge in NY (1909) was made here, and the Buzzard’s Bay
Bridge in Mass. (1934) was also produced here.
