S6 Gay & Church Street -Yellow School House – 1836

This simple Colonial Revival building has been modified since it was first built in 1836 in response to PA establishing a mandatory public school law.

Edward Garrigues and Joseph Whitaker owned a textile mill on the north side of French Creek.  They represented the School Board that was also formed in response to the PA law.  The building now houses the Phoenixville Area Community Services, a non-profit organization that provides food and other family services for the community.  So, the building is still serving the community’s needs, but in a different way than it once did.
