Enoch Lewis was a talented and highly regarded mathematics teacher. He began his career at the William Penn Charter School in Philadelphia and then at the Westtown School in Chester County. In 1808 he left Westtown and opened his own school for mathematical students in New Garden Township. He was also an active member of the New Garden Friends Meeting and a very strong anti-slavery activist as was this entire Quaker congregation. Enoch Lewis not only taught at his home and school, but it was here that he and his family protected, fed and guided the fugitive slaves to freedom when he sent them on their northward journey.
