The Society of Progressive Friends was established in 1853 to strongly support the anti-slavery movement. Their Longwood Progressive Friends Meeting House was built in 1854 and helped escaped slaves on their journey. They also hosted many well-known abolitionist speakers and visitors. Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglas, John Greenleaf Whittier, Sojouner Truth, and Susan B. Anthony all came here to publicly support the movement against slavery. Now, this historic building houses the Chester County Tourist Information Center where there is a special display that highlights the heroes on the Underground Railroad.
