Willistown Friends Meeting House

Nathan Evans was the minister of the Society of Friends at the Willistown Friends Meeting House. However, he was ousted from his position because of his support for the Anti-Slavery movement. In spite of fierce opposition and division, he continued to attend the meetings and preach his support for the abolition of slavery. Finally, in 1836 he presided over the first anniversary of the Anti-Slavery meeting at the Willistown Friends Meeting House. He also served as a conductor on the Underground Railroad. Fugitives came to him from West Chester and the western and southern parts of Chester County. He then guided them to Elijah Pennypacker in Schuylkill Township and he personally brought escaped slaves to Philadelphia as well.
