On this map you can explore sixteen important stops or “stations” on the Underground Railroad in Chester County.
Not an actual railroad, it was a network of safe places and routes used by African American freedom seekers looking to escape slavery by fleeing north to free states and Canada.
Chester County was a hotbed for abolitionists, many of them Quakers, who helped by using their homes, farms, wagons, cellars and even tunnels to help those on the next stop towards freedom.
