N11 Return to SRHC along Mill Street

This is the oldest existing street in Phoenixville. It was built by the owners of the Nail Works for the workers and survived the fire that brought an end to the Nail Works.

For the Phoenix Bridge Company, things gradually changed during the 20th century. The introduction of reinforced concrete in the early 20th century produced a revolution in modern bridge construction. The bridge company closed in 1974 and most of the mill ceased operation in 1987. A small remnant of the company, the Phoenix Pipe and Tube Company existed until 1995. Its legacy, however, lives on. From a small nail works in the 1790’s to a major, innovative iron and steel company; it brought about the creation of a multi-cultural community. The sign at the company entrance read: “AT PHOENIX – IT’S THE PEOPLE THAT MAKE THE DIFFERENCE” This respect invited everyone to be able to find a job at the mill. The company created a positive, multi-ethnic and multi-racial mosaic that still exists today in the Borough of Phoenixville.
