Phoenixville’s homes are among its greatest treasures. The homes that we will be seeing in this area are a wonderfully rich, varied grouping. They not only reflect the economic prosperity that allowed them to be built, but they also provide a picture of the myriad variations of Victorian architecture. They are all part of Phoenixville’s Nationally Registered Historic District which has over 1,200 properties.
Queen Victoria ruled for over 60 years and there are a wide variety of architectural styles all lumped together under the Victorian label. The Second Empire style became popular in the latter part of the 19th century. It refers to the 2nd Empire in France – the 1st empire refers to Napoleon’s reign in the early 1800’s.
The Frees Insurance office beautifully illustrates the 2nd Empire style. It is 5 bays wide with very ornately decorated windows – even on the roof. Named for the French architect Francois Mansert, the Mansard style roof is also indicative of the 2nd Empire style.
